Queer Gamers Coast to Coast
Can a game change someone's life? Do LGBTQ gamers see something in games that other players don't? Does it matter whether games feature same-sex relationships? How do LGBTQ gamers find each other, and what happens when they get together in one place?

What IS a queer gamer, anyway?

We've gathered video interviews with over 50 queer/ally gamers across the country addressing those questions, and we'll be sharing their personal stories here. Interviews touched on the importance of games, building community, and the value of events like GX3.

For more details, check out this video.

Cynical Reasons to Diversify Your Cast
There are hundreds of moral and philosophical reasons to increase diversity in your games and development teams. But how do you convince the people who don't care about any of that? How do you use dollar signs, and pragmatic thinking, and slightly gross social engineering to make your game more diverse? Anthony Burch, lead writer of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, has a few ideas.

Gaymers: The Difference A 'Y' Makes
What do Gaymers want?  What makes them different?  How do we make games they will love (and why should we even try)?  These are the questions that Game Designer Paul S. Nowak sought to answer when he conducted the industry’s most-recent academically admissible research into the connection between sexual identity and video game playing preferences.  Here, for the first time, he presents the results of his international survey of gay gamers, including guidelines for making successful homosexual content in games and real-world case studies of their successful implementations from his own career.

Finding The Fun Via Rapid Development~~
An outline of our alternative work pipeline and how prioritizing making a game fun to play makes
it both more engaging to develop and scope, and gets the job done quicker.

1. Game development as a creative endeavor.
A.) Ditching design docs and alternative approaches to design
B.) Enjoying the process of development through learning and self-improvement.
C.) If it isn't fun to make and test, it's probably not fun to play.
2. Rapid development process
A.) Why is rapid development useful and how can I do it?
        i) a good product delivered quickly > a good product slowly
ii) getting good at something feels good
iii) having time for new things is healthy, don't dread working on the same project
        iv) game jams
B.) The base (iterating and practicing making a genre of game over and over)
C.) The hook (experimentation with interesting mechanics)
D.) The polish (playing with the world and adding unnecessary amounts of detail)
        i. get the bullshit out of the way by this point.
E.) The content (making levels, enemies, bosses, etc.--the rest of development is FUN)

Journalists Discuss: Actual Ethics in Game Journalism
Limited Capacity seats available

Ethics in video game journalism is a heated subject in the industry --  to say the least -- with the gaming audience demanding both fair coverage and transparent, unbiased practices by journalists. This panel of working journalists in the field will clear the air and actually discuss the difficulty of ethics in a medium that is, at its roots, an enthusiast press. We will discuss everything from embargoes and relationships with PR, to advertising in the face of a free press and the polarization of social gaming topics such as race, gender, and sexual orientation.

She's sassy. She's curvy. She's the bullet-brandishing domme that's everyone's problematic fave. Why do queer players love Bayonetta so much? Why can she be such a guilty pleasure? Is there more to meets the eye in these games than yet another leather-clad video game sex doll? If you want the answers to these questions -- or just love Bayo just as much as we do -- drop by this panel and hear four of the world's foremost experts in Bayonetta Studies chat about the promise and peril of one of gaming's most controversial and fascinating heroines.

Romance Options: Game Writing for Gay, Bi, and Straight Audiences
Date Nighto's Kasey and Conrad are experienced speakers on the subject of visual novels, having fronted a panel discussion at Connecticon 2014. Our previous game release, Starfighter: Eclipse, was based on Japanese-style yaoi games, but we received amazing responses from both women and gay fans.

We've also presented at TCAF 2015's Comics vs. Games 4, where we got audience response and thanks for making visual novels featuring gay and genderqueer characters. Hustle Cat, our upcoming release, stars a main character whose appearance and pronouns will be player choice.

SPECIAL GUEST: Arden Ripley is an interactive fiction author who loves playing and creating dating sims and visual novels about empathy and relationships. Date or Die is a visual novel coming out in 2016 about romance and murder.

Date Nighto the company is committed to carving out creative space for marginalized voices, and we think the audience at GX3 wants to hear about our upcoming titles and how we're prioritizing visibility for all gender presentations and sexual identities.

On Indie Game Pricing w/ Dan Adelman
Much has been written about the so-called Indiepocalypse. Because of lower and lower barriers to entry and essentially zero marginal costs, there is a great deal of downward pressure on prices. For any individual developer, frequently dropping price is the most rational short run business decision. But in the long run, that approach makes everyone worse off. Fortunately, there is a better way. If we stick together, we may be able to reverse these trends and save indie gaming.

Gaming While Trans: A Discussion on Gaming & Trans Culture
Limited Capacity seats available

The gaming community can be a harsh and difficult place to those who are different. So how do you navigate it and find a community to belong to when you are trans? How do games effect us? Is that effect reflected in our culture? Come hear Brianna Wu and Katherine Cross talk about where the gaming community and trans community cross into each other and deal with these issues and more.

That One Time I Repeatedly Gave Birth to Fully Grown Wolves, and Other Gay Sex Games That We Deserve
(CONTENT WARNING: in this talk, there will be many sexual images considered "NSFW" / rated R, and a few rather explicit "18+" images, but nothing "hardcore"!... unfortunately, it's impossible to discuss images without seeing them) It is popular for not-straight or not-cis players of games to demand diverse representation from mainstream triple-A games; this is an important and worthwhile fight, but it also essentially maintains the same industry structure that led to our identities' oppressive near-erasure in games. In this keynote session, I'm going to talk about my own work as well as a metric crapload of other gay and queer sex games you probably haven't heard of, made by independent creators working on the margins of the industry -- and basically we made these games because WE ALL DESERVE THESE GAY SEX GAMES, AND WE DESERVE THEM NOW!!!!!!

Coffee: A Misunderstanding
A story that kind of looks like your typical “boy meets girl” story at first glance, except the boy doesn’t really feel like a boy and the girl doesn’t really feel like a girl. A commentary on the weirdness of online friendships that aren’t really friendships, set in the midst of a fan convention called AwesomeCon. A queer and socially awkward mobile device-assisted interactive play, with audience participation. A play where all the actors are audience members. Maybe one of them will be you? A collaborative game of finding the best ending to the story. Or the worst ending. Or maybe just whatever’s the most satisfying. It’s really up to you. Anything can happen.

Games Will Warp Your Mind and Turn You Gay (or They Could)
Games: are they an innocuous pastime? A hobby for self-improvement? Or a quasi-sentient species of pleasure-excreting brain-leeches from just beyond human comprehension, salivating to warp our minds in ways even more powerful than DRUGS or PORNOGRAPHY? Why do we play games, and should we? What do they want from us? Who do they work for? Can we harness them as obedient beasts of burden before they enthrall us and turn everyone into hyper-effective homo-gladiators in the endless colosseum of the Ubernet? You should forget everything you know about games, except that's impossible, so just pretend that you forgot everything and let's go from there.

Earthbound Saga - Screening
Limited Capacity seats available

Nintendo’s 1995 cult-classic EarthBound has inspired lots—artwork, music, entire careers. Robbie & Jeff Benson have been making a film based on the game for the last 20 years.

At ages 5 & 7—with their dad wielding a VHS camera—the Benson Bros unwittingly began a lifelong film project that gained a cult-following itself, EB Saga.

Join the award-winning San Jose filmmakers’ sneak-preview of upcoming films: EB Saga 5 & EarthBound USA. Followed by Q&A (ebsaga.com, earthboundusa.com, ubseymovies.com)

Why You Should Create A Webcomic
Zach Wienersmith, creator of SMBC, and Alex Woolfson, the writer and publisher of the full-color yaoi webcomics Artifice and The Young Protectors, talk about why releasing your work as a webcomic is the best way to build an audience, connect with your readers and ultimately earn some income for your hard work. Megan Praz does webcomics for publications such as Autostraddle and SKYD Magazine. They will discuss the reasons why releasing your comic a page a week on the web is superior to other forms of independent publishing and will cover how to set up your Web site, promote your work with online ads, build a fan base, set up a successful donation system and ultimately bring your book to print.
